The Vaudevillians

Last night my sister and I saw The Vaudevillians on their Australian tour.   My sister found out about it and was very keen to go and to get the VIP tickets for the meet and greet after.  The Vaudevillians stars Jinkx Monsoon who is the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 5, and Major Scales, who was pretty spectacular in this.

The show was great, I usually enjoy a good quirky bit of theatre. A very good laugh to be had by all.  We had an insane guy in the audience who was just about to die from laughter, I’m sure his tummy muscles are pretty sore today!

The story is The Vaudevillians is that they were frozen in the ice in the 1920’s and have thawed out due to global warming only to find that their non-copy written music has been stolen by others, so they are performing it in their original style.  One of my favourite things about the show was simply hearing the Jinkx Monsoon voice, Jinkx/Jerick has such an interesting voice.  I also enjoy hearing songs I don’t like performed in a different style with different inflections, it can completely change a song and make you see it in a whole new way.

Ok, so here are my photos from the meet and greet 🙂

I made comment that I tend to look like a serial killer in photos (that or a primate, i’m just not photogenic) so Jinkx said “lets do that then.” I think Major Scales is winning…

And a serious one…maybe Jinkx is my new style icon?  Her outfits were amazing and I want ALL OF THEM!

Banana Bread

Whenever there are some mushy bananas in the house they either go to the chooks or to Banana Bread.  Now, I am not really much of a baker most of the time but we had a LOT of over ripe bananas and I did not think the chickens could get through all of them so went on the hunt (I just asked my facebook page) for a simple Banana Bread recipe.  My sister-in-law suggest one which I tinkered with a little (I added melted butter as I really do not like dry banana bread and had a fear it might be dry).

Mash 2-3 bananas, add 50 grams melted butter and 3/4 cup of brown sugar, stir to combine.

Add 2 eggs, mix through.  Add 1.5 cups of Self Raising flour (more if it is too wet) and mix until combined.  Pour into a greased and lined loaf pan and bake at 170 c for 40-50 minutes.

Serve while warm with butter.  This recipe makes a really moist banana bread.  LOVED IT!

The end of the loaf went to the chooks for lunch.  They did not love it.

A Week of Critters

Over the last week I have spied loads of interesting Animals, both around my suburb and while out.

This morning my partner and I were running early so stopped in to a park and saw some baby Willy Wagtails.  They were just like little mini cute adults.  We also saw a Blue Fairy Wren and some Finches.

Yesterday we went for a snorkel and spotted a few fish.

Earlier in the week I saw a Centipede and gangs of Galahs and Cockatoos and a pair of Pale Headed Rosella.

Unfortunately none of those guys caught on camera but I did get this lovely baby Bearded Dragon, a garden spider and a case moth.

Gecko Foot

I found this little dead fellow in an odd spot, so wanted to move it somewhere it could be of use to other animals (i.e. the ants could eat it).  I grabbed a few snaps of it’s foot first.  Pretty awesome and amazing little feet!

Image

It reminded me of this photo of a Gecko being devoured by ants on a brick wall.  They took the entire gecko with them.  I watched them devour it’s flesh.  Came out of the house while later and the bones were gone as well.  When I find dead animals I want to keep the bones of I often find that the small ones are very difficult to just give to the ants to clean as the ants will also devour (or maybe take?) the bones.

Workshops

Although I spend most of my time researching and making Anatomy I also have a casual day job as the Hands On Brisbane Coordinator with Bleeding Heart, part of the Wise Foundation. Hands On Brisbane happens Saturdays at 166 Ann St Brisbane City.

I run a few of the workshops each term and we have just announced our Autumn 2014 season.  My favourite workshop is Terrariums. When I teach a workshop I hope to provide the attendee with enough info, and the confidence to be able to give a craft a go at home and let them know that there is always so much more to learn and they can easily find out lots more with just a little bit of research.

f you’d like to attend one of my workshops, or one of the other Hands On Brisbane Workshops follow the links below.  I’d love to see you there!  Bookings are essential!

I popped in to the Queensland Museum and this is what I saw.

I had an afternoon appointment near the museum and wanted to use the outing to get some other activity.  I realised I wanted to be drawing some creatures with exoskeletons so decided to pop in to the museum with my camera.  Here is what I saw, plus some blurbs about how some of these critters used to scare me.

Image

A new skull display.  This is really fun and includes some really tiny tiny skulls.

Image

Porcupine.  This is a really interesting skull and makes me think of Pans Labyrinth.

Image

Trapdoor spiders.  I remember my mum pointing out a trapdoor spider hold when we were holidays having a breakdown on the side of the road.  Made me a little concerned to be trapped there.

Image

A longicorn (that is what this guy is) used to terrify me in the stair well at the flats I lived in.  It might have been a different beetle each time but I was so scared of them!

Scarabs, because they are pretty.

Wombat Skeleton, to draw.

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide for the Quirky Couple

To be honest I am not really a big fan of Valentine’s Day.  Traditional Valentine’s fare such as little  bears or heart shaped boxes of chocolates don’t really do a whole lot for me.  BUT, if my partner gave me something quirky that he knew I would love, or something practical and useful, or something for one of my collections, I’d be overjoyed.

I hope some lucky partners out there get some beautiful Anatomical Hearts from their Valentine.  I love the symbolism.  It is like saying “this is my actual heart I am giving you.”  Warnings about hurting it implied.

Here are some of my lovely anatomical hearts that might suit your quirky Valentine.
