Terrarium Workshop for Winter-done and dusted

Some super cute Terrariums were made at our Terrarium workshops this winter for Hands On Brisbane.  More Terrarium workshops planned for Spring and Summer.  Send me a message through my contact page if you are interested in learning to make your own Terrarium.

The Finders Keepers Countdown is on…

The Finders Keepers is on in Brisbane the weekend of the 5th and 6th July, about a month away!  I applied at the last minute after getting home from holidays and have been making goodies since I found out I got a spot.

As I make all of my stuff from scratch it is a lot of work.  Screen printing, stamping, cutting out felt to sew, needle felting…  And now I have to start thinking about the display I want to have (I’ve got a lot of ideas, just need to bring them all together).  At least my felt jobs are dwindling.  On the list at the moment I only have Heart Necklace, Plant Cell Necklace, Uterus Brooch, Liver Brooch, Felted Brain Jar, Kidney Jar, Felted Brain Hair Tie, Felted Brain Brooch,  Vein Man Mini Cushion and Skin Hoop.  I should be able to get most of this finished by end of next week.  I’ll cut most out tomorrow…

Heart Brooch

I’ve been playing around with designs lately and this is the most recent Heart.  I have a template for it that I haven’t yet lost (the last template for a nice heart went missing) and it is flat, so can ship at the cheaper postage rate, always a bonus!  I started making hearts like this when I was approached by a lady who wanted a gift for those who looked after her during heart surgery.

Teratoma

IMG_7762

A Teratoma is a a tumour that collects cells from around the body.  Known to have hair, fingernails, teeth and sometimes limbs, eyes and other body parts (I always think of The Dark Half by Stephen KIng).  Some of them used to be mistaken for a vestigial twin.  Teratoma translates to Monster Tumour and it certainly is!

I started making Teratoma’s after watching a documentary them and have spoken to many teratoma patients.  Unfortunately a Teratoma can cause some severe problems when in the brain (if the patient survives a brain Teratoma-often a baby at birth).

Teratoma’s are also commonly found on the Ovary at puberty (failed menstruation) or at the base of the spine.

I do not recommend doing a google image search for Teratoma.

Stamped Wrap

Stamps are hard not to love.  Whether it is a humble potato stamp, store bought stamp, someone else’s hand carved handy work, or, best of all, your own hand carved stamp.

I learnt to carve stamps from Kay Watanabe as part of the Hands On Brisbane and truly love the technique and the results.

Today I spent a little time making some more wrap for orders using my own hand carved Your Organ Grinder Anatomy stamps.  I use my stamps to make wrap and tote bags, rather than selling the stamps I carve.

Refreshed Anatomy

The beginning of a new year means going back and looking over all of the body parts I have forgotten to re-make after they have sold, or decided to put to bed for a while because they are getting a bit annoying to keep making over and over (did someone say UTERUS!).  New year, refreshed anatomy!
